A message to the Oglethorpe community about today’s Supreme Court decision

Dear Oglethorpe Community:

We write to you following today’s decision by the Supreme Court to overturn Roe v. Wade. We, as senior leaders of Oglethorpe University, want to affirm our unwavering commitment to women’s reproductive rights. Access to the full range of quality health care services is vital to gender equity for women and birthing persons.

As a learning community, we must create spaces capable of holding the myriad emotions that exist, provide resources for healthy coping practices, and work towards creating a culture of equity. We encourage faculty and staff to allow students to engage in reflection and dialogue about the implications of this decision.  We will continue to do what we can to help people in our community to access the healthcare and resources they need.  And we will monitor the repercussions of this decision and what it will mean for us in Georgia.

Lastly, we want to ensure you have the support you need. We encourage you to reach out to friends, family, and those you trust to connect.  For additional mental health support, students should contact the University Counseling Center, 470-231-5836 or [email protected]. Employees should access the University’s Employee Assistance Program 1-800-538-3543 or www.cignabehavioral.com/cgi.

As we reflect on the 50th anniversary of Title IX, we know the benefits of having gender diversity on campus and will continue to champion those efforts that will result in an inclusive community of learners.

Sincerely,

Dr. Nick Ladany
