Response to tragic events in Atlanta on March 16

The following statement was issued by Oglethorpe University President Nick Ladany on March 17, 2021 in response to the tragic shootings in Atlanta on the previous day:

I am heartbroken by the horrific murders that occurred yesterday in Atlanta. This tragedy underscores the alarming rise in violence against Asian and Asian American communities since the pandemic and is a somber reminder of the responsibility we have in eradicating hate and intolerance. We stand proudly in support of those of Asian descent in our Oglethorpe community and are here to support you during this difficult time.

In addition, a message from Dr. Laura Renée Chandler, vice president of diversity, equity and inclusion, Michelle Hall, vice president for campus life, and Dr. Kyle R. Williams, dean of students, was sent directly to Oglethorpe students.

Oglethorpe’s Counseling Services and the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Task Force offer continuing services and programming to support students.
