Election Results & Community Support

Dear Oglethorpe Students,
 
I know many of you are following the returns from last night’s elections. Although we don’t know the outcome of the presidential election, I recognize that today brings feelings of uncertainty.
 
I am so proud of our community’s many efforts to support the democratic process. We thank Dr. Kate Keib and her students, who worked to report incidents of voter suppression, the brothers of Alpha Phi Alpha, who spent yesterday at the polls delivering snacks and water, and the many faculty, staff and students who worked, supported, and participated in voting.  
 
No matter the outcome, now is the time to stay focused on the issues and remain active. I urge us all to keep the momentum as we voice the needs of our community and advocate for change. The threat of the COVID-19 virus remains, as do the threats of racism, inequality, and injustice. In our state, we can expect that there will be a runoff in the senate race. There is much to be gained, individually and collectively, through civic participation, and we will keep you informed about ways to get involved at Oglethorpe and in the greater Atlanta community.
 
Student Involvement will be hosting a daily ‘Comfort Corner’ for students to process emotions and engage in post-election conversation. You can join tomorrow from 1-2pm at this link.
 
Additionally, Counseling Drop-in hours are available Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from 6-7:30pm. To access drop-in hours, please text 470-231-5836 and a counselor will contact you within 10 minutes to direct you to a zoom room.
 
We must take time to thoughtfully engage with each other and to foster a spirit of generosity and kindness. I encourage you to listen, support, and perspective-take with peers, friends, and colleagues. In the days and weeks to come, I hope you will seek the support you need and that you will look for ways to help bring our community together.
